BIOGRAPHY
Michael Vincent Jones is a Manchester-born operatic tenor whose work spans opera, concert performance, contemporary music, and arts outreach across the UK. He completed his BMus, MMus, and PGDip at the Royal Northern College of Music, where he developed a reputation for dramatic intensity, musical versatility, and a compelling lyric tenor voice.
Michael has performed a wide range of operatic and contemporary roles, appearing with companies and ensembles including English National Opera, Northern Opera Group, Radius Opera, Hull Urban Opera, Preston Opera, and Bolton Symphony Orchestra. He was named an Iford Arts New Generation Artist in 2016.
In 2018, Michael premiered the role of Dieter in The Path to Heaven and performed the role of Lurcher in Dorothy with Victorian Opera under the baton of Richard Bonynge. Reviewing his performance as Lurcher, ConcertoNet described Michael as “the catalyst Dorothy needs to make the work spark,” praising his “fabulous inflections” and “effervescent expression”. Opera Today similarly noted that he “does a delightful job” in the role.
In 2019, Michael created the role of Hephaestus in The Fire of Olympus with Radius Opera and covered the role of First Priest/Judge of the Dead in a new production of The Mask of Orpheus for English National Opera. Seen and Heard International praised his portrayal of Hephaestus as “eerie and chilling,” highlighting both his dramatic characterisation and commanding stage presence.
Further appearances include The Christmas Elf with Northern Opera Group, the role of Squire in Thomas and Sally, Dr. Parkins in Whistle and I’ll Come to You, My Lad, and Tenor in Crocodile as part of Hull Urban Opera’s Bumps in the Night season.
Reviewing Michael’s performance as the Squire in Thomas and Sally, critic Charles Hutchinson wrote that his “tenor Squire moved convincingly from quizzical to lusty,” while the Operetta Research Center described his performance as Lurcher as “one of the highlights” of Dorothy. In 2022, Michael performed the role of Don José in Carmen with both Preston Opera and Bolton Symphony Orchestra. More recently, he returned to Hull in 2024 to perform the role of Maurice in the premiere of The End of the World Party and appeared as the Pied Piper in Northern Opera Group’s production of The Pied Piper.
Alongside his operatic work, Michael is an active concert soloist. In 2025, he performed the tenor solo in Das Lied von der Erde with MuzikFermata as part of the ensemble’s opening concert in Oxford.
Passionate about music education and accessibility in the arts, Michael also serves as Vocal Lead for Tameside Music Service and has worked with ENO Engage on community and outreach programmes.
Based in Manchester, Michael continues to build a diverse performing career across opera, concert, and contemporary music, combining strong dramatic storytelling with a warm and expressive vocal style.
